Ryan Day says elite defensive Ohio State football player could play offense too
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has a bevy of weapons on offense. They have two great running backs, a great stable of receivers, and a more mobile quarterback. It should be an improvement from last year. That was the side of the ball that let them down at the end of the year.
Defensively, the Buckeyes might be the best in the country. They had the best pass defense in the country and allowed the second-fewest points in the country. That great secondary got even better when they added safety Caleb Downs from the transfer portal.
Downs decided to come to Columbus after Nick Saban retired. He was one of the best safeties in the country as a true freshman and should be even better as a sophomore. Besides playing great on defense, it sounds like Ryan Day might want him to play great on offense as well.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Day mentioned that Downs has been in the running back room recently hanging out in meetings. They might look at getting him a few snaps offensively. How much he is involved was not divulged, as is expected. Of course, Day isn't going to tell us that.
It's a little strange that Day would want to put Downs at the running back spot when the Buckeyes already have two great backs in TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins. You would think he would want one of those guys on the field at all times.
If Downs is going to be on the field on offense, I would have thought they'd put him at receiver for a few snaps. Instead, Day has opted for running back. I'm very intrigued to see what kind of plays Chip Kelly could scheme up for him and how they would use him in the backfield.
