Ryan Day describes how the Ohio State football team will use Will Howard
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has a new starting quarterback in Will Howard. Howard won the job over four other guys who were battling for the job. It wasn't a surprise. Howard didn't transfer in to ride the bench. Now, he gets to lead the best team he's ever been in charge of.
Howard should be a slight upgrade from Kyle McCord. McCord had a strong arm and a high floor, but he didn't have the talent to lead a comeback. He was a quarterback who always had to play from ahead. He was also one-dimensional because he couldn't run the ball.
That won't be the case with Howard. Howard is the fastest of the quarterbacks on the team. His legs were a big part of his game while he was at Kansas State. Ryan Day was asked about how his legs will be used for the Buckeyes and his answer should excite Ohio State football fans.
Will Howard will be used by the Ohio State football team like Justin Fields was
Day said that Howard is going to be used in the running game just like Justin Fields. "If you remember what we did with Justin Fields, it's probably similar to that." is what his exact quote was. That should excite every single Buckeye fan because Fields is one of the best running quarterbacks the Ohio State Buckeyes have ever had.
Howard is going to be used in read-option plays. Who are defenses going to commit resources to? Howard, or one of the dynamic running backs in the backfield? Having TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins in the backfield will open up opportunities for Howard to keep the ball and get serious yardage.
The Buckeyes should have a better offense than they did last year. With how good this defense is, the offense needs to just be good, not even great.
