The Ohio State women's basketball team got a double bye in the Big Ten Tournament because they were the number-one seed. They were the number-one seed because they won the regular season Big Ten title. Being ranked number two overall in the country, they were expected to make the Big Ten Tourney finals.

Maryland had other ideas. They came in as the 8-seed and demolished the Buckeyes. It was a game that got out of hand in the second quarter and never got close again. They fell 82-61 and will now go home with a 25-5 overall record. It's a crushing loss that has NCAA Tournament ramifications.

This is the type of loss that could knock them out of a number-one seed in March Madness. They had a shot to be the number-two overall seed if they had made the Big Ten Tournament Championship. Now, they'll be lucky to get that final one-seed.

The Buckeyes got crushed on the boards. They had a -14 rebounding margin in the first half and it only got worse as the game went on. Maryland had a whopping +24 rebounding margin. They had 21 offensive rebounds. Quite frankly, it was a disgusting effort from the Buckeyes.

Cotie McMahon takes a lot of blame for this loss. She was a pitiful 3-17 from the field and just 6-11 from the free throw line. It's not like she took a lot of long shots either. Most of her misses were right at the rim. She just couldn't make layups. The rest of the team couldn't make up for it.

Because McMahon was so bad, it forced the Ohio State women's basketball team to shoot more threes. They finished just 6-22 from beyond the arc. That's just 27%. This loss should be a wake-up call for this team. They just thought they could go to the arena and beat Maryland without even trying. They were wrong.

If they play like this in the NCAA Tournament, they'll lose to a worse team again. Kevin McGuff needs to get his team focused for March Madness.
