Ohio State football: Transfer QB taking official visit to Columbus
By Ryan Stano
Under Ryan Day, the Ohio State football team has been known for its quarterback play. The Buckeyes have been able to recruit and develop QBs to play at a high level before getting taken in the first round of the NFL Draft. That's part of the reason Day was so successful early in his head coaching career.
That was not the case this past season. Kyle McCord underwhelmed and is now at Syracuse. Neither Devin Brown nor Lincoln Kienholz looked even halfway decent against Missouri in the Cotton Bowl. They still don't have an answer at that position heading into 2024.
We may have an answer to what Day is going to do at quarterback. We told you that Will Howard could be interested in coming to the Ohio State football program next season. It seems that is accelerating towards reality as he will now take an official visit to the school.
Howard is a multi-year starter at Kansas State and has played in a significant amount of games against quality opponents. He would give the Buckeyes something that they don't have at the quarterback position right now; experience. None of the QBs on the roster right now have combined to play as many games as Howard has.
Perhaps that's why Day is attracted to him. He knows that this could be his last year in Columbus if things don't turn out well. He doesn't want to trust his future to someone who still isn't ready to see the field. If he's going to go down, he's going to go down with a guy who's seen a lot of football.
I wouldn't say that it's a done deal yet that Howard is coming to Ohio State, but it's a pretty good indication that it's close to happening. Things can always change though.
