Ohio State might get a transfer quarterback after all
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team needs a new starting quarterback for 2024. That is not news. Kyle McCord is now at Syracuse and Devin Brown is starting the Cotton Bowl. If Brown plays well, he has the inside track on the job next season. If he doesn't, the Buckeyes are in trouble.
Perhaps that's why the Buckeyes are still looking at potential matches in the portal at that position. Will Howard, former quarterback at Kansas State, is reported to be interested in Ohio State. Ohio State apparently has mutual interest as well.
Howard certainly has experience. He started in parts of three seasons for the Wildcats and has played in some big games. This past season, he threw for 2,643 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He also ran it 81 times for 351 yards and 9 touchdowns.
Howard does provide an element in the running game that the Buckeyes didn't have last year with McCord. He also had his best passing game statistically against Texas this year when he threw for 327 yards and 4 touchdowns in an overtime loss.
But turnovers and inconsistency are huge issues for Howard. He completed just 61% of his passes this year and turned it over 11 times. Does the Ohio State football team need another QB who makes some questionable decisions? I'm not sure Howard is the answer.
I don't think a decision will be made either way until after the Cotton Bowl. If Brown lights it up in Texas, the job is his. If he struggles, I could see the talks between OSU and Howard continue. I'm still not sure they decide to take him. I'd rather give Air Noland a shot instead of bringing in Howard.
This is something to keep your eye on as the weekend approaches. Howard could make a decision by the end of the weekend.
