Ohio State football team's most important player is on a preseason watchlist
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has several players on their team who are on preseason watchlists. That's what happens when you are the second-ranked team in the country. They are one of the favorites to win the national championship because of all of the talented players they have.
The Davey O'Brien Award is given every year to the most outstanding quarterback in college football. The Buckeyes have had plenty of nominees for that award in the past. C.J. Stroud, Justin Fields, and Dwayne Haskins are just some of the recent ones to be finalists for the award.
Another Buckeye is now on a preseason watchlist for this award. It's Will Howard, who also happens to be the most important Ohio State football player. While he hasn't officially been named the starter yet, he continues to take the lion's share of the first-team reps.
Ohio State football quarterback Will Howard on Davey O'Brien Watchlist
Howard is likely going to be the guy that the Buckeyes turn to when the season starts. Considering all of the players that he has around him, he could be one of the favorites to win this award. Howard's legs also give him an added dimension in winning this possible award.
Ohio State is usually good at putting their quarterbacks in a position to succeed. Now that Chip Kelly is taking over the offense, the Buckeyes should be able to run the offense much more efficiently. If Howard is able to get some protection up front, his numbers should be pretty gaudy.
Howard also has the fourth-highest Heisman odds as well. The Buckeyes are also going to do what they need to win. Some games, that might be relying on the defense. In other games, the offense might light it up and put up video game-like numbers
I fully expect Howard to play well but I don't think he'll quite play well enough to win this award.
