Will Howard continues to impress in practice for the Ohio State football team
By Ryan Stano
For the second straight season, the Ohio State football team is having a competition for the starting quarterback position. Last year, Kyle McCord emerged after going against Devin Brown and Lincoln Kienholz. McCord is now gone and Brown and Kienholz remain fighting for that spot again.
They are competing against transfer Will Howard. Howard was brought in from Kansas State and this is his final year of eligibility. Conventional wisdom would say that Howard didn't come to Ohio State to ride the bench in that final year. Still, he has to go out and earn it.
During the quarterback battle last season, the reason it took Ryan Day so long to officially name a starter was that he didn't see the consistency that he was looking for. No one could put together a string of good practices together. That's what Will Howard is starting to do.

Howard has put together two really solid practices in a row after looking a bit shaky in the first Fall practice of the year. He knows that if he wants to successfully grab the starting job, he has to keep that consistency going. The Buckeyes need consistent play from the quarterback position.
It's still just the first few practices of the Fall, so there is a lot that can still happen. The Buckeyes have a lot of work they are still trying to do to prepare for the season. Howard still has room to improve, even though he's the clear favorite for the starting job at this point.
If Howard can keep putting together solid practices for the next week or so, Ryan Day will likely come out and name him the starter. That would put this team in a better spot than they were a year ago when the competition lasted into the season. I'm sure Day wants to avoid that if he can.
