Ohio State football team has mixed reviews in opening game
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team was expected to dominate Akron in the first game of the season. With how good the Buckeyes are on paper, it wasn't ecpected to be a fight. Yet, that's exactly what we saw in the first half as the Ohio State Buckeyes were only up 17-3 at half.
The second half told a different story and the Buckeyes ended up winning the game 52-6. They did not cover as the line was 48.5. That score also is a bit misleading because the Buckeyes scored two defensive touchdowns after Lathan Ransom had a fumble recovery for a touchdown and Gabe Powers had a pick-six.
Ohio State looked like the team in the second half that we expected them to be. They were much more dominant. Will Howard looked uneven though. He was 17/38 for just 228 yards but he did have three touchdowns, including tow of them to freshman Jeremiah Smith.
Ohio State football team has mixed first game vs. Akron
Smith looked good in his first game as a Buckeye he had six catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns. This is despite the fact that he dropped his first pass. Smith looked like the best player on the field for the Ohio State football team and he's only going to get better.
On the flip side, the offensive line was a disaster. In the first half, they couldn't get any push in the running game. It was embarrassing that they couldn't handle a MAC defensive line. By the end of the game, Ohio State did average 5.2 yards per carry. I was still expecting more.
Justin Frye clearly has not gotten any better at coaching the unit on the field. He's already a garbage recruiter. It seems like keeping him was a disaster. This offensive line has to get better if the Buckeyes want to win a national championship.
