Ohio State football gets first transfer commit of the year
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has been in contact with a ton of players from the transfer portal since it opened at the beginning of December. Most of them have been quarterbacks. Yet, no one had committed to the Buckeyes up to this point for whatever reason.
That changed on Sunday. The Ohio State football team finally grabbed someone from the portal, albeit at a position that isn't an urgent need. They took tight end Will Kacmarek from Ohio University. He becomes the first player the Buckeyes take from the portal this cycle.
Kacmarek was productive while he was with the Bobcats. He had 22 catches this past season for 243 yards and two touchdowns this season. While the Buckeyes don't use the tight end a ton in the passing game, it will be nice to add some depth at that position.
Adding a tight end is great, but why haven't the Buckeyes prioritized getting players at positions they actually need help with? Why haven't they gotten an offensive lineman or a quarterback? They also don't have much depth at defensive line either. It doesn't make sense to go through the rest of the offseason without upgrading those spots.
Ryan Day continues to baffle when it comes to his roster construction. That's not to say that Kacmarek is a bad player, but he's not the type of player that the Buckeyes need to add right now. They have plenty of tight ends still on the roster.
We'll see if the Buckeyes add any more players from the portal before Spring ball rolls around. I tend to be pessimistic about that actually happening. Day doesn't have a track record of using the portal effectively. We'll see what happens in the next few weeks. 2024 is shaping up to be a year of consequences around the program.
