The hype all offseason around Jeremiah Smith was insane. Don't get me wrong I've been on the hype train too, especially after the Spring Game. The only problem was he hadn't played in a real college football game yet. But Saturday he played his first game for the Ohio State football team against the Akron Zips.

He had a rough first drive, dropping his first target and then getting a flag thrown on him for not being set. However, that was arguably his only bad drive. He led the entire receiving core with 6 receptions 92 yards and 2 touchdowns. Ohio State's quarterback, Will Howard, looked like his favorite target was Smith.

Now this is impressive because he is a true freshman. We knew before the season started that Smith would be taking over Marvin Harrison Jr's role. Now even with all the hype that surrounded him, I'm not so sure people were convinced he'd be better than Harrison. But after seeing this performance I can see fans saying he's better as early as the end of this season.

Marvin Harrison Jr. didn't even start in his freshman year, but to be fair I would say Harrison was in a more talented receiver room. Smith and Harrison share similar builds, with Jeremiah at 6'3 and 215 lbs and Harrison at 6'4, weighing 205 lbs.

With the physical play style that Jeremiah Smith has, he very well could end up being better than Marvin Harrison Jr. to Buckeye fans. But no matter what both will be remembered as one of the best to all OSU fans in years to come.

The Ohio State football team has to love what they saw from the freshman in his first game. Howard seems to already have chemistry with him and it should only get stronger as the season goes along. He might already be the best receiver on the team.
