Ohio State football coach Ryan Day wins award that oddly was just created
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has had some great rosters over the years. Every single year for the last decade or so, they've had the most talented roster in the Big Ten. They haven't been able to win big games because of coaching, play-calling, or a combination of both.
Ryan Day has been the overseer of the program since 2019. He has coached in a National Championship Game but also hasn't won a Big Ten Championship since 2020. Day is generally considered to be a good coach, but some Buckeye fans beg to differ.
CBS Sports seems to like what Day has done in the past and what he did this offseason. They like him so much that they gave him an award that they created this offseason and doesn't really have much meaning behind it, other than that he had a good offseason.
Ohio State football coach Ryan Day wins Preseason Coach of the Year
CBS gave Day the Preseason Coach of the Year Award that they seem to have created. What does this award mean? Nothing. Day hasn't won a game yet this season. The only thing he's done is get some players from the transfer portal and assemble a nice coaching staff around him.
Don't get me wrong, both of those things are important. This is the best coaching staff that Day has had since he's taken over the head coaching job. But they actually have to show that they can put it all together on the field. Chip Kelly and Jim Knowles have proven they can do that, but Justin Frye hasn't.
Do I think Day is the best coach in the country? Of course not. Kirby Smart has run circles around him in the last few years. Sark has done a great job with Texas. Quite frankly, Day could be fired after this year if he doesn't beat Michigan. He's closer to the hot seat than he is to being the best coach in the country.
Day is under an enormous amount of pressure and he knows it. He's embraced it. Let's see if he knows how to handle it.
