Jake Diebler made a bold take on the point guard of the Ohio State basketball team

In his first official offseason as head coach of the Ohio State basketball team, Jake Diebler did not wait around forming the roster for next season. He's brought in transfers that are going to fit his style of play and returned some key players from last season. The new head coach has some high expectations for one returner in particular on this Buckeye basketball team.

Adam King of 10TV caught up with the new head coach of the Ohio State basketball team yesterday afternoon to talk about the offseason moves that were made and looking ahead to next season. Diebler had a lot of praise for his point guard, Bruce Thornton, as he stated in the clip above that he thinks Thornton will be "one of the best guards not only in the Big Ten but that he'll show he's one of the best guards in the country".
Given how the past two seasons have gone, that sounds like a scorching hot take. However, in this new era of Ohio State basketball and how the season finished, I don't think it's that crazy of a statement. We all know that Thornton can score the ball, but towards the end of the season, his playmaking went up a notch.
In the three postseason games for the Buckeyes, Thornton averaged 7 assists per game including a 10-assist performance in their final game of the NIT Tournament against Georgia. His playmaking is one thing I believe has to transition to next season with the roster Diebler has constructed as he is the only true orchestrator that can create opportunities for others.
Thornton's scoring in the offense will come with time. If he is dissecting defenses and racking up assists, the floor will open up for him to get his points. Thornton has the ability to get teammates involved, which could elevate him into the conversation of not just one of the best guards in the Big Ten, but in the country as well.

Thornton is an outstanding leader and a very unselfish basketball player. With how he finished this past season, there's a lot to be excited about in year three of Bruce Thornton.
