How every newcomer looked in the Ohio State Football team's first game
By Tyler Lyman
The Ohio State football program had one of the best off-seasons as far as bringing in players in college football history. Saturday they faced the Akron Zips, the first game for the Buckeyes. We got to see each one of these players play but how did they do?
To start it off let's talk about QB1 Kansas State transfer, Will Howard. He played hands down great. No question about it he ran Chip Kelly's offseason really well. The way he was able to extend plays and throw on target was just great.
Howard threw 28 passes, 17 of them being completed, for 228 yards and 3 touchdowns. He overall had a good game, and I know there were people for weren't fully bought in on him but they should now after this game.
Next, Quinshon Judkins, an Ole Miss transfer, had 13 carries for 55 yards and one touchdown. I think this goes for the whole running back room, they need to establish themselves. They didn't play horribly but they also didn't play like the best running backs in the country. Judkins did have a rough start to the game but let's be honest who didn't on this Ohio State team? I think he might look better next game.
James People, a freshman running back, got in the game. He played fine for his first-ever college football game. He got 6 carries for 30 yards and one touchdown. He didn't get a whole lot of playing time but I think he showed he has potential to start next year.
Now to probably the best newcomer performance for the Buckeyes, Jeremiah Smith. Now let's be honest every Ohio State fan had a bad feeling about him after that first drive, but the next drive he got rid of all worries. He played physically and was the best receiver on the field against Akron, no question. His stat line was 6 receptions, 92 yards, and 2 touchdowns.
His very first touchdown was a goal-line fade. That play showed us that he has the potential to be something truly special. I think after seeing this it's not completely crazy to say he could end up being top ten at least in the nation, and become the best receiver for Ohio State.
Finally, Caleb Downs, the Alabama safety transfer. There has been talk about Downs potentially becoming the best defensive back in the nation. I think it's hard sometimes for safeties to get stats when their defense is so good. But he got 2 tackles and half a sack. I think he didn't make any bad plays, just did his job but mainly his defensive front just played so well to where he wasn't really needed every play.
All these new Buckeyes played well against the Zips, there weren't any bad performances. I think a couple of players will develop more over the season, but this Ohio State team proved that they can compete for the national championship.
