Figuring out an underrated position battle for the Ohio State football team

One of the most underrated positional battles for the Ohio State football team is the tight end battle. Who is going to come out on top?

The Ohio State football program has a few positional battles going on right now. Quarterback is the highest-profile battle, although that isn't much of a battle. Figuring out right guard is the most important battle because of how poor the offensive line was last year. Will linebacker is a fight too.

All of those battles have been talked about more than the battle at tight end. While tight end isn't a position that the Buckeyes have traditionally used, it will be a bigger part of the offense under Chip Kelly. They need a tight end who can be a weapon in the passing game.

There are two guys who are fighting for the starting tight end spot. Because the Buckeyes mostly play with a three-wide receiver set, only one tight end will be on the field. That means either Gee Scott Jr. or Will Kacmarek, a transfer from Ohio, will be the starter.

Who will be the starting tight end for the Ohio State football program?

Scott Jr. came into camp as the favorite to win the job. He's been in the program the longest and actually started his Buckeye career as a receiver. He moved to tight end to get more playing time. This is the year that he could end up paying off on that move.

Kacmarek transferred in right after the 2023 season ended. He has plenty of experience in his own right at the position. He has caught 20+ passes in each of the last two seasons. That's the same number of balls Scott Jr. has caught in his three-year career.

Ryan Day said that both tight ends will play this season. I expect most of the reps will start out being given to Scott Jr. because of his blocking. I think both will benefit from being in Kelly's system as opposed to just Day calling the plays.

Both tight ends could end up being weapons in the red zone. That's exactly what this Ohio State football team needs.
