A roundup of Ohio State football players in the NFL Week 1
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football program has a ton of guys in the NFL every year. This year is no different. There were a lot of Buckeyes who were in new spots and some who were trying to improve on last year. So how did each one do? We'll give you an update on a select few.
We'll start with last year's number-two overall pick C.J. Stroud. Stroud helped the Houston Texans win their opening game 29-27 over the Indianapolis Colts. Stroud was 24/32 for 234 yards and two touchdowns. His throw at the end of the game on third-and-long to seal it was sick.
Justin Fields was making his first start for his new team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. He started the game after Russell Wilson was hurt. His results were certainly mixed, but he led his team to an 18-10 victory. He was 17/23 for 156 yards and ran it 14 times for 56 yards. Despite not leading the offense to a touchdown, he might be the starter for the rest of the year.
A former Ohio State football player has had his season end
Unfortunately, one of Fields' new teammates had his season end on Sunday. Punter Cameron Johnston came to Pittsburgh in the offseason to be an upgrade at that spot. He suffered a season-ending knee injury after he was run into and they didn't even get a penalty for it. That's a tough break.
Rookie Marvin Harrison Jr. had a debut to forget. The Arizona Cardinals receiver had just one catch for four yards. He was only targeted three times in the entire game. Perhaps the offseason lawsuit is a bigger distraction than he thought it was going to be.
Ezekiel Elliott is now back with the Cowboys after he spent a year with the New England Patriots. He was pretty good in his return, running it ten times for 40 yards and a touchdown. It's surprising that he's their top back again, but he seems to be doing well.
Former Ohio State football players do all kinds of good things on Sundays. That should continue as the year goes along.
