Ohio State won't give up hope trying to flip a 5-star Texas Tech commit

The Buckeyes are hoping to bolster the defensive line by flipping 2027 five-star recruit Jalen Crewster.

With the book officially closed on the 2026 football season and the Transfer portal also officially closed, the 2027 recruiting cycle is starting to heat up. As head coaches begin winter workouts, they are also focusing on building the 2027 recruiting class.

A couple of elite recruits have already made their commitments, but, of course, none of it matters until the ink has dried during the Early Signing Period, which isn't until December later this year. Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has been working very hard on the 2027 recruiting class, not just getting commitments from elite recruits, but also working to flip a few others.

One recruit that Day is putting a lot of focus on flipping is five-star defensive lineman Jalen Brewster out of Cedar Hill, Texas. The 6-foot-3, 302-pound lineman has been committed to the Texas Tech Red Raiders since October of 2025, but he has been flirting with the Buckeyes.

Ohio State certainly isn't letting Brewster go without a fight and has continued to push for his flip from the Red Raiders. The five-star defensive standout is ranked as the No. 5 player in the Class of 2027, the No. 1 defensive lineman in his class, and the No. 3 player in the state of Texas, according to 247Sports Composite recruiting rankings.

Brewster has even come out and talked about Ohio State pushing to flip his commitment, speaking highly of defensive line coach Larry Johnson. The long-time defensive line coach has been with Ohio State since 2013 and has helped develop some elite talent out of Ohio State, including NFL stars like Joey and Nick Bosa and Chase Young, who all three won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.

If Brewster is hoping for a good career in the NFL, being coached by Johnson might be his best bet, but Ohio State will have to compete with the money that Texas Tech has probably been able to offer him.
