Ohio State's hiring of Virginia Tech offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen as offensive line coach is a strategic move aimed at bolstering both the Buckeyes' offensive line and recruiting. With extensive experience in multiple offensive roles, Bowen brings a unique blend of coaching talent and leadership to the program, addressing key gaps left by the departures of Chip Kelly and Justin Frye.

Bowen, a Georgia native, is entering into his 16th season of coaching, having spent the last three years at Virginia Tech. His coaching journey includes stints with Penn State, Fordham, and Maryland, where he played pivotal roles in developing NFL-caliber talent like tight end Pat Freiermuth and running back Chase Edmonds.

Bowen helped quarterback Kyron Drones achieve significant success at Virginia Tech, including setting a Military Bowl rushing record in 2023. This kind of development speaks to Bowen’s ability to develop players, which aligns perfectly with Ohio State's goals and brand.

Bowen’s experience spans various offensive positions, from tight ends and quarterbacks to the offensive line, giving him a comprehensive understanding of offensive schemes. This versatility is especially valuable to head coach Ryan Day, who has embraced a more CEO-like role, relying on capable coordinators and position coaches to execute the team's game plan.

Bowen’s time at Penn State was particularly noteworthy. He helped lead the Nittany Lions to a record-breaking 53-39 win in the 2019 Cotton Bowl, where his play-calling resulted in the highest point total in Penn State’s bowl history. His coaching also led the team to five rushing touchdowns, tying a Cotton Bowl record.

Before Penn State, Bowen served as the offensive line coach at his alma mater, Maryland, where he made an immediate impact by guiding the Terrapins to a major upset win over No. 23 Texas. His offensive line also contributed to Maryland's victory over Minnesota in their Big Ten opener, showcasing his ability to build strong, effective units. at any level.

As Bowen joins Ohio State, his focus on both the offensive line and recruiting will be critical in maintaining the momentum from the Buckeyes' recent national championship. His experience developing NFL-bound players like Freiermuth, running back Chase Edmonds, and tight end Mike Gesicki underscores his ability to mold future stars—a perfect fit for a program that consistently produces top-tier NFL talent.

New Ohio State coach Tyler Bowen is a supreme recruiter

In addition to his on-field coaching expertise, Bowen has proven himself in recruiting, helping to attract top talent during his time at Penn State. In fact, he spent three years at Penn State as the offensive recruiting coordinator, the tight ends coach, and even the offensive coordinator position for a year in 2020.

During his time there, he recruited the state of Maryland very well, signing Landon Tengwall, Zakee Wheatley, and Olu Fashanu. Outside of Maryland, he was also the primary recruiter for Theo Johnson and Tyler Warren, which highlights his eye for talent and ability to see potential.

In short, Bowen’s hire is a well-calculated move by Ryan Day to maintain Ohio State’s offensive prowess and competitive edge. With his NFL experience, proven track record of player development, and recruiting expertise, Bowen is poised to immediately impact the Buckeyes’ offense as they prepare for another championship run.
