The Ohio State football program has a lot of open coaching positions right now. That's what happens when you win a national championship. It's the cost of success, and it's one that the Buckeyes are willing to pay in order to stay great. They have three big coaching slots to fill.
Ohio State needs a new defensive coordinator after Jim Knowles decided to go to Penn State. They also need a new offensive coordinator after Chip Kelly left for the Las Vegas Raiders. Justin Frye left for the Arizona Cardinals, so that left an opening for the offensive line coach as well.
While the Buckeyes have mostly been focused on hiring a new defensive coordinator, they have already made a decision on who the new offensive line coach will be. This is despite the fact that they have not announced a hire for a new offensive coordinator yet.
The Ohio State football program will hire Tyler Bowen as their offensive line coach
According to FootballScoop, the Ohio State Buckeyes will be hiring Tyler Bowen as their new offensive line coach. Bowen was previously at Virginia Tech. He worked mostly with their tight ends but was also the offensive coordinator for the Hokies.
Bowen is young, but he was already considered a good offensive coach. He has experience, most recently, with Virginia Tech, Penn State, and the Jacksonville Jaguars. While he has a lot of overall coaching experience, he doesn't have much offensive-line coaching experience.
Bowen hasn't been an offensive line coach since 2017 when he was with Maryland. He also had two years coaching the offensive line of Fordham. It's a hire that kind of comes out of nowhere because he has no ties to Ohio or Ohio State on the surface.
The only connection to Ryan Day that is there is the fact that Bowen worked for Urban Meyer for a year while he was with the Jaguars. Perhaps Meyer made the recommendation to Day and he decided to bring him in for an interview.
Whoever the new offensive coordinator is needs to be on the same page as Bowen.
