The Dallas Cowboys might have stolen the best Ohio State football player in the draft. They traded up to take Caleb Downs with the 11th pick in the draft. He was the most productive defensive player for the Buckeyes over the last two seasons. He was also the most versatile.
When Matt Patricia started coaching the Ohio State Buckeyes, he moved Downs all over the field. At times, he would play deep in coverage. Others, he would play closer to the line of scrimmage to help stop the run. Occasionally, he would play in the slot at the nickel position.
With Downs in Dallas, the Cowboys can use him in multiple positions. Downs will actually get to play his brother in his rookie season. Josh Downs is a receiver for the Indianapolis Colts. Those two teams play each other this year. In fact, Josh is the one who revealed which position Caleb will play.
Caleb Downs' brother reveals where the former Ohio State safety will play for the Dallas Cowboys
Josh revealed that he and Caleb talked before the draft. Caleb told Josh that if he got drafted by Dallas, he would be playing in the nickel.
"He told me, if he's going to the Cowboys, he's playing nickel. So, that’s like head-to-head all game. I was like, 'That's interesting.' So when he got drafted, I was like, 'You know, we play this year,' and he got all hype. It's all fun and games, but I still gotta let him know he's the little brother."
Josh is clearly looking forward to taking on his little brother. Caleb playing in the nickel will allow him to do a multitude of things for the Cowboys. He can blitz, stop the run, and get on speedy slot receivers. It seems that is what head coach Brian Schottenheimer believes is the best thing for him to do.
Downs is going to be able to succeed in whatever position he plays. He has the talent to be a Hall of Fame player, and he's perhaps the smartest person in this draft. Ohio State wouldn't have won the national championship in 2024 without him on the roster.
Now, Downs will try to help the Cowboys win a Super Bowl for the first time in 30+ years. It has been quite a while since Dallas tasted some serious success in the NFL. Downs wants to change that as quickly as possible.
