Almost everything the Ohio State football program touched turned to gold on the recruiting trail in June. They were able to add several recruits in multiple classes, including multiple five-star recruits. It was a solid month after having things go slowly for the first part of the recruiting cycle.
One position still in flux for the 2027 recruiting class is quarterback. While the Buckeyes have Brady Edmunds committed in this class, that doesn't mean that he is going to stay that way. He has been looking at possibly flipping his recruitment somewhere else, especially if Ohio State brings someone else in.
A few months ago, it was reported that the Ohio State Buckeyes were trying to flip Trae Taylor from Nebraska. Taylor was a four-star recruit early on in the cycle, but he is now a five-star recruit. It seems that their bid to flip him is going to come up short, however.
Ohio State likely won't flip Trae Taylor from Nebraska
Taylor is a Nebraska native, so it was always going to be hard to flip him. He has been committed to the Cornhuskers since May of last year. At this point in time, it doesn't look like Ryan Day and his staff are putting too much effort into trying to get Taylor to sign with the Buckeyes.
In fact, it doesn't look like Ohio State is trying to go after any other quarterback too hard. It actually looks like they might have circled back on Edmunds. He is still committed to the program at the moment. Perhaps he ends up staying in the recruiting class after all.
Even if he does, the path to playing time for any 2027 quarterback is not going to be easy. Tavien St. Clair is almost certainly going to be the starter after this season. Julian Sayin is likely to head to the NFL after a good year, leaving St. Clair waiting in the wings for starting snaps.
Ohio State has bigger fish to go after than another 2027 QB
The Buckeyes have more important players at different positions to go after than adding another quarterback in the 2027 class. As long as Edmunds stays committed to the program, there is no need for them to chase another one. Keeping Edmunds helps them from a depth perspective.
It also isn't the worst thing in the world for Day if he goes a class without a quarterback. He could always decide to take a quarterback from the Transfer Portal when the year is over if he wants more depth at that spot. There is almost no chance that a true freshman would win the starting job over St. Clair right away, anyway.
Instead of Taylor, the Buckeyes have focused more of their efforts on adding a couple of five-star recruits still on their radar. They have the ninth-ranked recruiting class. Of course, they are working on protecting their own players from being flipped by other programs, as well. That's a fight they will have to embark ok until Signing Day in December.
