The Ohio State football program puts players into the NFL every single year. They are the most successful program at creating first-round picks, as no program has more than they do. Receiver Jeremiah Smith is about to be one of them, as he is the best receiver in the country.
When he is finished after this season, he will likely be a top-three pick. This past draft, the Buckeyes had four first-round picks. That's part of what made the end of last season so frustrating for fans. Losing the final two games of the season was not what fans had in mind.
Caleb Downs was one of the first-round picks. Surprisingly, he was the last first-round pick. The Cowboys traded up for him, which was perhaps the best move in the draft. Now, Smith is repping the jersey of his former teammate as a way to promote him.
Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith promotes Caleb Downs
Smith was seen repping a Downs Cowboys jersey during a camp that Ohio State is running. Downs was the best defensive player that the Ohio State Buckeyes had in each of the last two seasons. They don't win the national championship in 2024 without him.
It's cool to see current players still supporting their teammates, even now that they are in the NFL. The Buckeyes put plenty of players in the NFL Draft every year, so teammates can rep NFL jerseys quite often. Smith will likely have his NFL jersey represented next year when he is drafted.
Smith will likely be helping Ohio State recruit some of the high school kids who are at the Woody for the camp this week. This is camp season, and Ohio State has hosted a couple of them already. This helps them get a good look at some of these kids up close.
Caleb Downs will be one of the best rookies in the NFL this season
It would be surprising if Downs was not one of the best rookies in the entire NFL this season. His ability to help in both the pass and the run game is a rare combination, especially with his youth. He will be able to be moved all around the field to help the defense do what they need to.
Fans of other teams will likely rue the fact that they let Downs fall outside the top 10. He is going to be one of the best players on the entire Dallas roster once he gets comfortable in that defense. Despite his lack of size, Downs is still a physical force. The injury rumors floating around before the Draft were also unfounded
It's likely that Downs will get a new Buckeye teammate with the Cowboys next season after the draft. Dallas likes the Buckeyes, so they will likely end up drafting another one in the next few years. That is something that Downs would welcome. The Colts just did that, and the two former Buckeyes are now teammates once again in Indianapolis.
