While Ohio State is trying to close out the 2027 class with some strength, the Buckeyes have added some players to the 2028 recruiting class. In fact, they have already added a five-star receiver when they added Jett Harrison. Now, they have to get someone to throw him the ball.
Ryan Day has a reputation for developing receivers into first-round picks. He will be looking to do that this year with Julian Sayin. Five-star recruit Christopher Vargas has seen that, and now he has received more than a few predictions to pick the Buckeyes.
Ohio State expected to land five-star quarterback Christopher Vargas
Vargas has announced that he will be committing on Saturday. Not only that, but Vargas has been given a prediction from Adam Gorney of Rivals to pick the Buckeyes. It becomes the third prediction that the Ohio State Buckeyes have received to land him at this point.
Landing Vargas would give Ohio State two five-star recruits out of four commits to this point in the class. He stands at 6'4 and 180 pounds. He is rated as the seventh-best recruit in the country and the second-best quarterback in the class. However, Day thinks he's the best.
The Buckeyes would love to have Vargas team up with Harrison for three to four years. Of course, neither of them would get to campus for a couple of years. However, landing two five-star recruits early in the class would give them some momentum to start out the 2028 recruiting class.
We will find out shortly if Vargas decides that he wants to play in Columbus. On Saturday, he will choose mainly between Ohio State and Oregon, although he has a host of offers from other schools. Day and his staff have to feel really good about their chances to get a commitment from him.
Ohio State has time to build a killer 2028 recruiting class
While most of its 2027 recruiting class has been built already, they still have plenty of time to put together a really good 2028 class. Right now, they have three commitments for that class. Adding Vargas would give them another blue-chip guy right out of the gate.
Of course, the Buckeyes will still have plenty of time to recover if Vargas doesn't pick them. With it being so early in the 2028 recruiting class, Ohio State would be able to pivot to find another quarterback. They have a really good opportunity to assemble a killer class in 2028.
Vargas would give the Buckeyes a great start at doing something they failed to do in the 2027 class, and that's sign a top-three class. Right now, the Buckeyes aren't even in the top five in 2027. That's wildly disappointing considering how things looked at the end of June.
Nothing is certain until these recruits sign with the team, anyway. Getting a 2028 recruit to actually stick to his commitment would require Ohio State to stay connected with these guys for over two years. That's something Day and his staff will be tasked with doing, as they are every year.
