For the last couple of weeks, Ohio State football fans have been wondering who is going to start at the quarterback position since Julian Sayin went down. Sayin got hurt against the Hoosiers and is likely out for the year. For the rest of the season, a new player will be starting behind center.

Ryan Day has kept things under wraps for the last couple of weeks while they prepare for USC. However, Day strongly hinted that Luke Fahey was going to be the starter over Tavien St. Clair. According to multiple reports, the Buckeyes seem set to do just that.

Ohio State reportedly will start Luke Fahey against USC

Multiple reports indicate that the Ohio State Buckeyes will be starting the true freshman instead of St. Clair. To anyone outside of Columbus, this might be news. However, anyone who has followed Ohio State over the last few months knew that this was the likely outcome.

Fahey has been the backup for the entire season, being ahead of St. Clair on the depth chart. Despite St. Clair being in the system for longer, Fahey still clearly has something that St. Clair does not. He must be able to process things on the field faster than St. Clair can, even though St. Clair has better physical tools.

Ohio State still has a shot to win a national championship this season. Day can't afford to let that opportunity slip away. He has to play the guy who has the higher floor. At this point, he clearly believes that is Fahey, despite the fact that he is a true freshman.

Fahey had to have impressed in practice. St. Clair is an impressive physical specimen, but he clearly didn't do enough in practice or in mop-up duty to get this starting job. Fahey has a good support system around him to help him succeed in this spot.

Ohio State will help Luke Fahey play well against the Trojans

Fahey isn't going to win this game alone. He is going to have to lean on the defense to help him get the victory. Ohio State has to be ready to win a low-scoring game. They very well could try to run the ball and win a game that doesn't have a total score of more than 30.

Arthur Smith has had two weeks to come up with a game plan to properly get Fahey ready for what he will face against the Trojans. It wouldn't be surprising to see Ohio State actually start the game out by throwing the ball, since no one will be expecting them to do that.

If they do, expect Jeremiah Smith to be heavily involved in those early passes. He is the best player in the country, and getting him the ball as much as possible should be the goal. Fahey needs to just throw the ball anywhere near him, and Smith can come down with it.

This news isn't surprising. It likely won't be surprising to the Trojans, either. Ohio State has been showing us this path all along with the actions they've been taking.
