For the last couple of weeks, Ohio State football fans have been wondering who the new starting quarterback will be for the Buckeyes. Julian Sayin is likely out for the year, but Day has yet to name a new starting quarterback since his injury against the Hoosiers.

Day said that he was going to use the bye week to evaluate things, and he did. Now, he's had half of this week leading up to USC to further evaluate Luke Fahey and Tavien St. Clair. On Wednesday, Day didn't name a starter officially, but he strongly hinted at who it is.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day hints at who will start at quarterback

Ryan Day hinted that Luke Fahey will be the starting quarterback on Saturday night against the Trojans. He immediately said that he was not officially naming a starter. However, he was then asked if he wasn't naming one because he didn't know or just because he didn't want to name one.

He then strongly hinted that it will be Fahey.

"I think things have progressed this week, similar to the way they have in the past. I'll just kind of leave it at that. We'll keep preparing, and we'll play the game on Saturday."

If things have progressed as they have in the past, all indications point to Fahey being the guy they are going with. Fahey has been above Tavien St. Clair on the depth chart all season long. If things haven't changed after another week of practice, that means Fahey will get the nod.

Quite honestly, it's safer for Day to start Fahey. He seems to trust Fahey more based on what he's seen in practice. Having him as the backup to this point means that Fahey has the higher floor. That's what they need as they go on the road against a tough opponent.

Luke Fahey could seize this opportunity to lead Ohio State into next year

This is the opportunity of a lifetime for the true freshman. If Fahey is able to play well against the Trojans, he will certainly start for the rest of the year. That gives him not just a chance to lead the Buckeyes to a College Football Playoff spot, but also a national title.

Doing that would mean Fahey is the favorite to start next season, as well. Sayin could decide to return to Columbus if he does miss the rest of the season so that he could rebuild his NFL draft stock. That could make things very sticky in a similar vein to what happened in 2015.

That's thinking way too far ahead, though. The Buckeyes are just focused on winning this game on Saturday night. Fahey will have a game plan to do just that. Day will likely make sure that he has a lot of safe throws. They will likely lean on the running game and the defense to win this game.

Winning games is all that matters. Day knows that. Winning the rest of the games on their schedule looks easier than it did just a few weeks ago, even with a backup quarterback.
