Reading between the lines a bit, it appears 5-star Big Walnut receiver commit Jamier Brown's visit this weekend ties directly to 4-star Huntington Beach (CA) quarterback commit Brady Edmunds. It's no secret that Edmunds has wandering eyes, with a potential flip to the UCLA Bruins once said to be in his sights.
Now, though, with Edmunds in Columbus, many are thinking that there's a stronger chance than before that Edmunds will follow through with his commitment. Cleveland.com's Andrew Gillis called Brown's presence during Edmunds' visit interesting. That in and of itself is interesting.
"For a five-star receiver, there’s no drama when it comes to Brown. ... He’s locked into Ohio State, has shut down his commitment, and will come to Columbus in a few months as one of the best receivers in the country. This official visit weekend is just a formality for him, and he’ll interestingly join Edmunds," Gillis wrote.
Brown, unlike Edmunds, has been steady in his desire to attend the Ohio State University to continue playing football. In May, as Edmunds was inviting other schools to give him a reason to flip, Brown assured everyone that the Buckeyes were the only team in his mind.
“Time is just too close to just be playing around,” Brown said. “I know where I want to go, and it’s Ohio State. I really just don’t see no point in my going anywhere else. ... My recruitment’s been shut down for a minute. I just haven’t made it public. ... Me and coach (Ryan) Day had a conversation...I can’t wait to be up there and be great."
Maybe Brown is there to enforce the attitude Edmunds should've had all along. While every player has every right to treat the sport like a business, there are real consequences to doing so in the locker room. Edmunds getting right with his future teammates is important as a quarterback.
Jamier Brown could establish himself as a heroic Buckeye before ever playing a game
If Brown could help Edmunds realize there's nowhere else to be, we're talking about a 5-star recruit who is also a 5-star recruiter. We're also talking about someone who should have all tabs picked up in the greater Columbus metro indefinitely.
Edmunds, at six-foot-five, has the physical tools to do damage at every level. He's an accurate passer who could see an even higher percentage of his passes caught with an elite receiving corps, as he'd/he'll have in Central Ohio.
That the Buckeyes are seemingly bringing out the big guns to keep him on board proves his value. Edmunds is not someone the team wants to go down on record losing to a much inferior Big Ten program.
Brown's work this weekend will bring him a potential star QB for the future, but should also keep him on Ryan Day, Mark Pantoni, and probably a few important boosters' good sides. That's a great place to be on one of college football's most prestigious and built-to-last teams if you're Brown heading into signing day.
