The Ohio State football team won't be having a traditional Spring Game this year. They will be doing a showcase, which no one knows what that will entail. We do know that something will be happening because the Buckeyes have started selling tickets for the event.
With it not being a Spring Game that we have been accustomed to watching, it will be a little harder to learn something from the game. We won't be able to see some of the position battles, such as the battle at linebacker or nickel. We will still be able to learn who has the edge at quarterback, though.
That's the main thing that Ohio State football fans will want to know. They want to know who the starting quarterback will be next season. Even if there isn't a traditional game, we will learn who the favorite for the job is by seeing who gets the most reps.
How Ohio State football fans can learn things from the Spring Game
The quarterback battle isn't the only battle we can learn about. The battle for the right guard spot will be critical, too. That battle between Tegra Tshabola and Austin Siereveld will be interesting to watch. Luke Montgomery is likely to be the starter at left guard.
Whichever of those two guards comes out with Julian Sayin, who is the presumptive leader for the quarterback spot, is likely the favorite to win the job. No jobs will be won or lost in the Spring. All of the position battles will become final once Fall camp rolls around in a few months.
Still, fans who pay money to come out to the Shoe expect to see something out there. My guess is that part of the game will be normal, while the rest of it will see the offense and defense put into certain situations that they might face during the season.
Whatever this Spring showcase ends up being will likely be what Ryan Day decides to do from now on. With Ohio State playing deep into December most seasons, this is the best way to maximize rest.
