The Ohio State football program has been trying to get some interest from players in the transfer portal. Since the portal officially opened on Monday, they haven't had a single player commit to the program. That hasn't been for a lack of trying though, as they have shown interest in several players.
One of the players who they showed interest in is former Purdue safety Dillon Thieneman. Thieneman was rated as the top safety in the transfer portal. He had shown some interest in the Ohio State Buckeyes when he first got into the portal, and things looked promising.
Instead, Thieneman has decided to play for a different Big Ten school. He has decided to transfer to Oregon, which is currently the number-one team in the country. That's a big blow to the Buckeyes considering they lose him to a rival school in the Big Ten Conference.
Ohio State football team won't get top-rated safety from the transfer portal
This better not be a harbinger of things to come for Ohio State. There are several other positions that they need to fill more than safety. The offensive line is a major need. They are looking to grab no fewer than three players up front on the line in the portal.
It is surprising that no one has committed to the Buckeyes from the portal yet. Normally, they would have landed at least someone who they were interested in. There are still some big fish out there for them to land. Of course, Ryan Day's main focus is on beating Tennessee next weekend.
How the Buckeyes are able to play in that College Football Playoff game will go a long way in determining how many guys they are able to get from the portal. Players want to go to the best programs that have NIL opportunities, as well as chances to win a title.
