Ohio State football players clean up Big Ten awards
By Ryan Stano
Coming into this season, the Ohio State football team was expected to be one of the best teams in the country. The sheer amount of talent they have on the roster is overwhelming. While the loss on Saturday was extremely disappointing, that statement still remains true.
A lot of Ohio State Buckeyes showed just how good they are this season. As a result, the Buckeyes cleaned up in the Big Ten awards. Several Buckeyes were honored with awards and All-Big Ten selections. Ohio State's best player, Jeremiah Smith, even did something that's never happened before.
Smith becomes the first freshman to win the Big Ten Receiver of the Year as well as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in the same season. He was also named as a First-team All-Big Ten selection. He was dominant all season and the honors are well-deserved.
Several Ohio State football players win Big Ten awards
Smith was one of seven Buckeyes who were First-team All-Big Ten selections. Donovan Jackson, Seth McLaughlin, Lathan Ransom, Cody Simon, J.T. Tuimoloau, and Caleb Downs were also selected. Speaking of Downs, he also won the Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year Award.
Second-team All-Big Ten selections were Jack Sawyer and Sonny Styles. Ohio State had several Third-team All-Big Ten selections, including Emeka Egbuka, Josh Simmons, Will Howard, Denzel Burke, Tyleik Williams, TreVeyon Henderson, and Quinshon Judkins.
Big Ten Honorable Mentions were Ty Hamilton, Jordan Hancock, Davison Igbinosun, Josh Fryar, Tegra Tshabola, and John Ferlman. Personally, I'm not sure Tshabola, Fyrar, or Burke deserved to be honored, but I'm happy for them that they were.
Seeing all of these players get honored makes the loss to TTUN sting even more. It's clear that the Buckeyes had the better roster. Yet, they didn't get the win because of a terrible game plan from the coaches. The hope is that changes in the College Football Playoff.
