Ohio State football player gets snubbed for a major award
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football program had a lot of good players on the roster this season. It was why they had such expectations this season. So far, they have failed in all of their goals. They still have a chance to complete their final goal. That is to win a national championship.
One of the players who has been lights out on defense has been Caleb Downs. Downs has been the best player that the Buckeyes have had on the defensive side of the ball. Since coming over from Alabama, he has been a leader on that side of the ball.
The College Football Awards were on Thursday night. One member of the Ohio State Buckeyes was able to take home an award. Seth McLaughlin took home the Rimington Trophy. Meanwhile, Downs was snubbed from the major award that he was a finalist for.
Caleb Downs snubbed from winning the Thorpe Award
Downs was a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award. That award is given to the best defensive back in college football. With how well he has played all season, Downs should have won the award. Instead, it was given to Jahdae Brown out of Texas. Downs was snubbed.
If Downs would have gotten a few more interceptions, he might have won the award. Downs' stats were still pretty good. He finished the regular season with 61 tackles, .5 sacks, and that one pick against TTUN. Downs also returned a punt for a touchdown, although that doesn't really matter for this award.
Downs should be the favorite to win this award next season. He is the best returning safety in the country. He better win it because he will certainly be one of the top picks in the 2026 NFL Draft. Ohio State needs him to keep playing at the high level he is in order to win a national title.
