The Ohio State football program has been starting to drag a bit on the recruiting trail. Despite getting several crystal ball predictions for several elite recruits, they haven't been able to land any of those recruits yet. In fact, they haven't had a commitment for about a month.
Of course, the Ohio State Buckeyes have had a couple of weekends of official visits that have been nice. Still, those visits came and went without any prospects pledging to sign with them. It has been a frustrating start to June in a summer that they were hoping was going to be fruitful.
One recruit, four-star defensive lineman Kasi Currie, was once projected to pick the Buckeyes. Just a day before he was set to commit, the prediction flipped to him committing to Texas. On Thursday afternoon, he made his choice between the Buckeyes and the Longhorns.
Ohio State football team loses Kasie Currie to Texas
In the end, Currie decided to pick the Longhorns over the Buckeyes. This is despite the fact that Ohio State has dominated Texas over the last two seasons. They have beaten them in the College Football Playoff and during the regular season. This September, they will likely beat them again.
Georgia and Oregon were the two other schools that were finalists for Currie, but they never truly had a shot. It really came down to Ohio State and Texas. For whatever reason, Currie changed his mind at the last minute and picked the Longhorns. Once again, the Buckeyes lose out on a recruit.
Ryan Day and his squad still have just 13 commitments for the 2027 class. They were expected to have more than that to this point in the cycle. Day needs to do something to change the momentum, because they are starting to slide backwards, and it's already halfway through the month.
This weekend could change everything for the Buckeyes
Being able to land five-star receiver recruit Monshun Sales this weekend would certainly change things for the better. He will be on campus this weekend. He is from the state of Indiana, and it seems to be down to the Buckeyes and the Hoosiers for his collegiate decision.
Of course, Ohio State was once projected to land him, too. Now, he is favored to head to Indiana. If they want to have any chance of flipping that prediction in their favor again, they have to have a strong visit. Getting him to commit while he's on campus would be even better.
That will be up to Day and new wide receivers coach, Cortez Hankton. Hankton landing Sales would be a good sign for the future of the receiver position. The best receiver in the country still resides in Columbus, and that is Jeremiah Smith. Coaching him another year will give Hankton a boost in recruiting.
Depending on how things got his weekend, Ohio State might finally be able to stop the poor streak of momentum on the recruiting trail. Losing out on Currie was not something they wanted to see happen.
