Since the recruiting services started tracking recruiting rankings reliably in the mid-2000s, the Ohio State football program has never won a recruiting national championship. That means that they have never had the top-ranked recruiting class in the country, no matter who the head coach has been.
They have had an excellent start to the recruiting cycle so far this year. They have the fourth-best class in the nation. Ohio State also already has a commitment from the top-ranked recruit in the country, which gives them a head start on having the top class.
The Ohio State Buckeyes still have just nine commitments thus far. They have a chance to change that on Friday, as one of the best edge recruits in the country will be committing. Mekai Brown has Ohio State as one of his final five schools, and he will be choosing then.
Ohio State football team has a shot to land another top edge recruit
Brown is a four-star edge recruit who is choosing between the Buckeyes, USC, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, and Ole Miss. He is projected to pick the Trojans, although Ohio State is still trying to bring him in. Brown is from Connecticut, so geography doesn't play a factor in this decision.
Ohio State already lost a recruit to a different Big Ten rival last week. It would be annoying for them to do that again. Still, they could pull it out and gain his commitment. If they did, having both he and DJ Jacobs committed for 2027 would be a great one-two punch off the edge.
This weekend will be a massive recruiting weekend for the Buckeyes, with it being the Spring Game. Several recruits from across the country will be in attendance, and fans should expect to see several recruits commit over the weekend, either before or after the game.
