It seems that the Ohio State Buckeyes dodged a major bullet thanks to the Transfer Portal.
Last offseason, the Buckeyes lost nearly 30 players to the portal. The wide receiver position was hit the hardest, as Ohio State lost five players at that spot. While Carnell Tate was the fourth overall pick, they lost two former five-star recruits to Notre Dame at that spot.
Quincy Porter was one of those receivers who transferred to play for Marcus Freeman. As a true freshman a year ago, he hardly played at all because of an injury. He caught just four passes for 59 yards. Now, he won't be playing this year for the Fighting Irish at all.

Porter will have surgery on his knee, according to Marcus Freeman, which has kept him out of any games this season. He will miss the entire season, not getting a chance to play a single snap for the Irish. Porter hurt the same knee at Ohio State, which kept him from getting more playing time a year ago.
It seems that Ohio State dodged a bullet by letting Porter head for the portal. There were rumors that Porter wanted more money in the Transfer Portal, which Ohio State was not willing to do based on his limited production. It was clearly a smart move, as it seems like Porter might not be fit enough to play.
Even with the surgery, it seems like Porter might have a chronically injured knee. It doesn't seem to be going well for him, even with a change of scenery. Even with Ohio State seemingly having a lack of depth at the receiver position, keeping Porter would have made things worse.
Ohio State already has an injured receiver in Kyle Parker. Parker has yet to play for Ohio State this season, even though he was finally healthy last weekend against Illinois. Even with that being the case, he still has not played since transferring from LSU.
Ohio State was mainly smart with the portal decisions they made this offseason
At this point in the season, the Ohio State football program seems to have made the right decision when it comes to most of the decisions they made in the Transfer Portal. Most of the players they let go seemed to have been the right decision. Meanwhile most of the players they have brought in have helped at least a little bit.
Parker is an exception, as he still hasn't done anything. Qua Russaw has played poorly at the defensive end spot, and he has had to play more with the injury to Zion Grady. However, Earl Little Jr. has been fantastic in the safety spot. Devin McCuin has been useful, too.
Ryan Day would like to hit a little better from the plate when it comes to bringing in players from the portal. Still, players like Christian Alliegro, John Walker, and Little have done a good job being productive members of the defense so far.
