The Ohio State football program has had to balance going deep in the postseason and building out a roster for the following season in each of the last two seasons. With the new 12-team Playoff, teams have to deal with the Transfer Portal opening when teams are still playing.

Ryan Day has done his best in the portal to land players while his teams have still been playing. Last year, it was easier because the Ohio State Buckeyes were eliminated in the first round. In 2024, it was harder for the Buckeyes to land transfers because they were still playing.

Day doesn't think it should be this way. He believes that rosters for the next year should be handled once the postseason is over. Day made that clear in a recent radio interview and indicated that he's going to throw his weight around to try to make that happen.

While speaking on 97.1 the Fan in Columbus, Day made it clear that he thinks rosters need to be handled after the postseason ends. Day seems to indicate that he would prefer college football no longer have an amateur model, and that's the way the sport is headed 10 years from now.

Day said he will make it clear in the Big Ten meetings that teams need to be finished with the postseason before they can start dealing with rosters for the following year. Essentially, Day wants things to be easier for himself and other coaches. In reality, that's not feasible.

With most colleges on semesters, having the portal open later doesn't make sense. Kids need to be enrolled in school before the semester starts in January, so having the portal window open later doesn't fit that calendar. That's why Day seems to want to change the model itself.

This inconvenience is one of the many reasons why Day gets paid so much money. He is compensated well to face these problems. This is one that he might be wrong on, unless he wants the CFP schedule moved up.
