The Ohio State football program has tried its best to navigate the transfer portal since it has become a prominent part of college football. Ryan Day has had very few misses since bringing in players from the portal. In fact, the Buckeyes wouldn't have won the national championship last year without transfers.

Day was able to pull in some key guys, including Will Howard, Quinshon Judkins, and Caleb Downs. The Ohio State Buckeyes now have some challenges when it comes to the Transfer Portal. In fact, the new transfer portal rules could not be worse for them than they are right now.

The new portal rules have made it so there is just one window, and it's in early January. The Buckeyes believe they will still be playing football during that period, so it makes it much harder for them to land transfers. Day made his feelings on that felt during his press conference on Tuesday.

When asked about the new portal rules, Day did not hold back his feelings.

"I don't think it's a good idea at all. In the conversations we had with the Big Ten coaches, I think the majority of them agree — I just don't quite understand how for teams that are playing in the playoffs are expected to make the decisions and sign their upcoming players while they're still getting ready to play for games. It doesn't make any sense to me."

Day continued to talk about the current calendar for student-athletes, but he still doesn't think that is what is in the best interest of the schools.

"I know the calendar is funky, but I know that the Big Ten and Tony Petitti have been working hard, because he doesn't believe it either. The coaches in the Big Ten had a lot of long discussions about that and tried to work through the different windows, but I don't agree with it being in January."

The Buckeyes will continue to try to win games while utilizing the portal to the best of their ability. They likely won't be able to land the best players in the portal in any cycle, but they will try their best based on when the window is. It just gives something else for elite programs to juggle.

Day will figure this out just like he has everything else.
