The Buckeyes welcomed St. John's to Columbus for their first game of the 2025 season back in the Buckeye state. They got off to a good start. Ohio State had a 1-0 lead after the first inning when right fielder Trey Lipsey III scored on a wild pitch. St. John’s struck back in the third inning when they scored three runs. They added another in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.

The Buckeyes took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth, getting four runs of their own.  to make the lead 5-4 in favor of Ohio State. In the bottom of the fifth, the Buckeye lead grew some more when shortstop Lee Ellis hit a two-run home run to make the score 7-4, Buckeyes. St. John’s tacked on four runs in the seventh to regain the lead 8-7, but Ohio State had their own burst in the same inning with three runs to make the game 10-8 heading into the eighth.

The Red Storm tied the Buckeyes in the top of the eighth, making it 10-10. Trey Lipsey knocked in Zach Freeman in the bottom of the inning with a single that gave the Buckeyes the 11-10 lead. The Buckeyes got a much-needed win to improve to 2-8. It’s not a win to define a season, as both teams were 1-8 to start the day, but it sure as heck beats going 1-9. Just ask St. John’s. Trey Lipsey led the Bucks with two hits in four at-bats, a walk, two stolen bases, and four runs scored. Matthew Graveline also went two-for-four, getting on base three times and knocking in three runs.

Ohio State will welcome Valparaiso to Columbus on Friday for a three-game series.
