In each of the last three years, the Big Ten has won the national championship. Ohio State won in 2024, and they are one of the favorites to win it again in 2026. Because of this dominance on the biggest stage from the Big Ten, fans of the conference claim it is the best conference in the country.
Kirby Smart already thinks that the Big Ten is better than the SEC. He likely isn't the only SEC coach who has that opinion, but he's the only one brave enough to voice it. Longtime coach of Alabama and LSU, Nick Saban, recently gave his thoughts on the battles for conference supremacy.
Nick Saban claims the Big Ten is better than the SEC
While speaking during Media Day on the SEC Network, Saban gave his firm opinion on the battle of the two conferences.
"I think the only reason people are talking about this is we dominated for so long, and we were so good, everybody makes a big deal out of being able to beat us. That doesn’t mean they’re better than us, and that doesn’t mean that just because you win the championship that you have a better conference. It just means you have one better team."
Saban clearly thinks that the SEC is still the best conference, even if he didn't come out and say it. He thinks that the Big Ten has just happened to have one better team at the end. However, that has now happened for three straight years, which clearly only leads to one conclusion.
In each of the last three years, the SEC hasn't even had a representative in the national championship. With that being the case, it seems pretty clear that the baton has been passed to the Big Ten. The Buckeyes are a big reason for that with their recent success, too.
Ohio State has no issues with the SEC any longer
For quite a while, the Buckeyes had issues beating SEC teams. That is no longer the case. In each of the last two seasons, they have amassed a 3-0 record against the SEC. They have beaten Texas twice and trounced Tennessee in the first round of the College Football Playoff.
Ohio State has another shot to do that this year when they take on Texas again. Beating them again would give the Buckeyes clear superiority over the Longhorns, as Texas has been one of the best teams in the conference in the last few years. That must mean Ohio State is better than every other team in the SEC.
Saban needs to get with the times and come to terms with the fact that the Big Ten is better than the SEC at this point in time. They are able to get better players, and better coaches have started heading to the conference.
Ryan Day is one of those great coaches. If he can win a national title this season, he will reach a level that very few coaches in the history of the Ohio State football program have reached.
