New NFL Mock Draft has a major Ohio State curveball coming in the Top 5

The 2027 NFL Draft is a year away, but it is never too early to lose one's mind over any mock draft.

Of the handful of teams who can realistically win next year's College Football Playoff, the Ohio State Buckeyes are chief among them. They are one of four teams who have made the 12-team format in back-to-back years. This includes winning it all two years ago. Ryan Day has his program firing on all cylinders. Many of his best players get drafted high on the regular. Look for 2027 to be no different...

Here is who Tankathon has in its way-too-early 2027 mock draft with two Buckeyes in the top five.

  1. Miami Dolphins: Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning
  2. Arizona Cardinals: Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore
  3. New York Jets: Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin
  4. Cleveland Browns: Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith
  5. Las Vegas Raiders: Texas Longhorns edge rusher Colin Simmons

FanDuel shared a graphic letting everyone know that Julian Sayin is going before Jeremiah Smith...

Sayin is a fantastic player, but he is not going ahead of Smith at this point in time. Although he is the only returning college player who has been a Heisman finalist before, Smith is an otherworldly talent at wide receiver. Of the many who starred under Brian Hartline, he is the most gifted. If he goes to the right situation, Smith could be a better pro than even Jaxon Smith-Njigba of the Seattle Seahawks...

Sayin going No. 3 to the New York Jets make sense, but Smith should be coming off the board first...

Tankathon has Julian Sayin going one pick before Jeremiah Smith in 2027

Truth be told, Smith to the Cleveland Browns at No. 4 makes a lot of sense. While they might need a quarterback, putting him in the same receiving corps as 2026 first-rounder KC Concepcion out of Texas A&M could do wonders in turning the lowly Browns around. Keep in mind that Cleveland head coach Todd Monken recruited and scouted all of these players during his three-year run at Georgia.

Where this way-too-early NFL mock draft should lose you is are there really going to be three quarterbacks taken before the best player in this draft in Smith? He might play somewhat of a luxury position at wide receiver, but Smith could potentially be the best pass catcher to come out in two decades. Is the next Larry Fitzgerald or Julio Jones worthy of a top-three selection? Most definitely.

In the end, Sayin does have a chance of becoming the No. 1 overall pick. Unfortunately, he still has to overcome the insurmountable hype trains Arch Manning and Dante Moore are riding on. To be frank, he has been the better quarterback of the three of them of this point of their college careers. Also, Colin Simmons plays a premium position of a pass rusher, so let's not rule him out going No. 1 yet...

For now, Smith feels like the player everyone wants to see go No. 1 overall in 2027 for the time being.
