New CFP rankings would give the Ohio State football team an intriguing matchup
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football program had a damaging loss to Michigan over the weekend. While it might not be damaging in terms of them not making the College Football Playoff, it's their fourth straight to TTUN. That means there are a lot of things need to change next season.
This season is not over yet. The Ohio State Buckeyes still have a chance to win a national championship. They have a much harder road to get there now because they won't have a chance to win a Big Ten Championship and get a first-round bye.
On Tuesday evening, the Buckeyes slid down to sixth in the CFP rankings. That doesn't mean they are the sixth seed, though. Because of the automatic qualifiers, the Buckeyes aren't necessarily in a great spot to make it all the way to the end. In fact, their current matchup would be very intriguing.
The Ohio State football team would host a College Football Playoff game if rankings hold
If the College Football Playoff started today, the Buckeyes would be hosting a home playoff game against Tennessee. Ohio State is seeded eighth and the Volunteers are ninth right now. That means the winner of that game would play a neutral-site game against Oregon.
Tennessee is a good football team. We saw what the flaws are with the Buckeyes on Saturday. That would be a tough game to win, even at home. Moving forward to take on an Oregon team that they've already lost to wouldn't be much fun either. This loss to TTUN puts them in this situation.
The conference championship games still need to be played. The rankings will change based on those results. Right now, the Buckeyes are on the fringes of hosting a playoff game. Buckeye fans better hope they do, because they would not do well on the road.
