Mike Greenberg's CFP expansion thoughts about Ohio State are absurd

The fact that he said this shows he doesn't really know how deep rivalries flow in college football.

The Ohio State football vs. Michigan rivalry is not just one of the best rivalries in college football, but in all of sports. For my money, it is the best rivalry in sports. The hatred between the two programs is something that fuels both teams for the entire season.

Not only is the hatred there, but the success from each program is there, as well. The Buckeyes and the Wolverines are two of the teams that have won the most in college football. When they play, the stakes usually include conference championship and national championship implications.

ESPN's Mike Greenberg is a Big Ten graduate, so you would think that he would understand what it means when these two teams play on an annual basis. Yet, his recent comments regarding the rivalry when it comes to possible College Football Expansion are absurd.

Mike Greenberg could not be more wrong about Ohio State

While speaking on Get Up, Greenberg theorized that if the CFP expands to 24 teams, Ohio State and TTUN could start sitting players during that final game.

"If we live in a world where Ohio State and Michigan rest their starters for that game at the end of the season because they've got the potential for five games sitting in front of them, then college football as we have known it ceases to exist."

On one hand, Greenberg is right. If that were to ever happen, the allure of college football would no longer appeal to the masses. Fans would move on to the NFL to get their football fix because traditional rivalries that have mattered for decades would no longer be a big deal.

At the same time, this would never happen. The Ohio State Buckeyes can't stand TTUN, and vice versa. These two teams hate each other with the passion of a thousand suns. Under no circumstances would they ever not try to beat each other if they are sharing the same field.

The Ohio State football team would never sit players against Michigan

If last year's victory over TTUN taught us anything, it's that the Buckeyes really want to beat the Wolverines every year. The elation that the team felt when they won on the road to finally get the monkey off Ryan Day's back was palpable. It's clear that the team would do anything to beat the Wolverines.

College Football expansion is a bad idea. Changing from 12 teams to 24 teams would be a disaster for college football. It would water down the regular season even more than it is since the CFP switched to the 12-team format. Ohio State has won a national championship with both the four-team and 12-team formats.

If Greeny doesn't want this scenario to happen, he needs ESPN to keep fighting against the expansion. The rumor is that they are the biggest opposition to expanding the CFP. Without their support, there is almost no chance that the format will change. Bigger isn't always better, and that's the case here.
