Miami has been chasing Jeremiah Smith from the moment he committed to Ohio State. Smith has stayed committed to the Buckeyes throughout his entire collegiate career, despite multiple attempts by the Hurricanes to tamper with him. In fact, Smith says he declined a $10 million offer from them last offseason.
Smith is the best player in college football, so Ohio State is glad to have him on the roster. Former Miami receiver Michael Irvin can't believe that Smith decided to turn down that offer. He can't fathom that anyone wouldn't want to play for the Hurricanes.
Michael Irvin can't fathom that Jeremiah Smith wanted to stay at Ohio State
Irvin essentially confirmed that Miami tampered with Smith, which is against the rules. He did so while appearing on The Dan Patrick Show.
"What I heard, I don't understand why he didn't do it, but what I heard is that Jeremiah Smith got up to $10 million offered. I don't know how you could get offered $10 million and not go home to play football."
That right there should get Miami in trouble with the NCAA. One of their most prominent alums, who is also working with multiple current Miami players, all but confirmed that Smith got offered an absurd amount of money to play for the Hurricanes. That should be a violation.
Irvin also doesn't seem to be able to understand why Smith would turn down that offer to stay with the Ohio State football program. This is despite the fact that Smith has played two seasons with the Buckeyes already. Why would he transfer for his final season when he will be a first-round pick next year?
Smith also has a better chance to win a national championship with the Buckeyes. There is a chance he ends up being a Heisman Finalist if the team wins the rest of its games, as well. Also, Ohio State has produced five straight first-round wide receivers. Smith will be the sixth.
Ohio State should file a suit against Miami for tampering
After this, the Buckeyes should file a suit against the Hurricanes for tampering with their player. If they aren't going to follow the rules, they should face consequences for their actions. Why wouldn't Ohio State want to protect their guys from other teams reaching out to their guys?
The only reason why they wouldn't is that Ohio State could be doing the same thing to other programs, just to lesser-known players. Almost every major program seems to be doing this, but not every program is promising players on other teams $10 million to transfer.
It's highly likely that nothing comes out of this. Still, it's very satisfying to know that Miami fans constantly begged Smith to transfer to Miami, and he never did. The only thing that could make things better is if the Buckeyes take on the Hurricanes in the College Football Playoff and get revenge for last year's loss.
Ohio State is used to being successful. Miami isn't in the modern era. Irvin and other Miami fans just don't understand that.
