Lou Holtz gives a reminder of Notre Dame's insufferable arrogance

Ohio State football fans get accused of being arrogant. Lou Holtz has shown that Notre Dame is the arrogant fanbase instead.

With those seven words, Lou Holtz reminded us of Notre Dame’s insufferable arrogance. He let everyone know he, the football program, the university, and the fans are looking down their nose at you because, well, you’re not on Notre Dame’s level…and you never will be in their eyes.

The 88-year-old legendary coach included that line in a social media post talking about what his beloved Fighting Irish need to do to beat Ohio State and he gave his final score prediction as well. I’m sure you’re shocked to learn he picked ND by three.

The other thing that bugs me is Holtz seems to claim Notre Dame football has a superior culture. Yes, the same Notre Dame football program that’s floated in and mostly out of the upper tier of college football for the last 30 years. After back-to-back Cotton Bowl wins in 1993 and ’94, the Irish lost nine straight bowl games.

The streak was broken win they got a win in the Hawaii Bowl. Since that 2008 bowl win (by the way, it came against Hawaii), they’ve also played in such illustrious bowls as the Champs Sports, Pinstripe, Music City, and Camping World. To be fair, they also played in the BCS championship game, as well as making the College Football Playoff twice.

In those three games, they lost by a combined score of 103-31. Claiming Notre Dame has the culture to beat Ohio State is one more example of their insufferable arrogance. Irish head coach Marcus Freeman is certainly building a culture, but it is hardly at the level Holtz seems to be claiming.

On social media, Irish fans are claiming the entire country will be rooting for them to pull off the upset. This could not be further from the truth. The Buckeyes may be unpopular, but Notre Dame is easily the most disliked college football program in the land. People who have just a passing interest can’t even stand them and it’s that we’re-Notre-Dame-and-you’re-not arrogance that makes them so easy to dislike.

Believe it or not, I’m not a Notre Dame hater. I’m actually indifferent towards them, but Holtz’s comment does not sit well with me. “Remember, we’re Notre Dame and they ain’t.” That and a dime used to get you a cup of coffee way back when the Irish actually were a college football power year in and year out.

Today, it’s nothing more than insufferable arrogance, and that gets you nothing, especially a national championship.
