Ohio State crushed Ball State in Week 1, leaving no doubt after a 56-3 drubbing. They didn't show too many concerns as the number-one team in the country. However, TTUN did not have the same success. Quite frankly, they should be coming out of the first week of the season 0-1.
Western Michigan was absolutely robbed of an upset victory in the Big House by the refs. Bryce Underwood looked horrible for the majority of the game, and he even turned it over twice. Now, his head coach is being noncommittal about his future, including against the Buckeyes.
Kyle Whittingham implies a Bryce Underwood benching could be coming
While speaking to the media, Whittingham implied that he is not totally committed to Underwood as the starting quarterback of the Wolverines.

It wouldn't be shocking to see Underwood benched after how poorly he played against the Broncos. He was also horrible against Ohio State last year, throwing for just 63 yards. The Buckeyes smashed TTUN in that game in part because of how bad Underwood is as a quarterback.
Benching Underwood for The Game would actually be bad news for the Ohio State Buckeyes. They know they can beat Michigan if Underwood is under center. They likely can if they trot out Tommy Carr, but he is still an unknown commodity. Not having Underwood out there would make things harder for Ohio State's defense.
Based on the way Whittingham is talking already, he is setting the stage for something to change in Week 2. Oklahoma could end up smashing Underwood, ending his tenure as the starting quarterback. Based on how TTUN played in Week 1, they will be lucky to make a bowl game.

Despite needing the Big Ten to gift them a win, Whittingham seems detached from the reality of how bad his team is. He claims that nothing Western Michigan did defensively caught him by surprise. Yet, they couldn't move the ball offensively for the majority of the game.
This team seems like a gigantic mess, which is music to Ohio State fans' ears. The Buckeyes may have permanently broken the program after beating their butts in Ann Arbor a year ago. If the number-one recruit in the 2025 class gets ruined by them, what other top QB will ever commit to them again?
This is further proof that money doesn't buy happiness. TTUN spent a boatload of NIL money to get Underwood to flip from LSU to TTUN, and it has not worked. Meanwhile, Ryan Day has had a much more measured approach to his team's spending. That seems to be working out just fine.
It wouldn't be shocking to see Underwood's tenure with TTUN end after this season. He could transfer away and try to get some actual coaching from a good program. Or perhaps he is damaged beyond repair. Regardless of the answer, Buckeye fans should sit back and enjoy the ride.
