Ohio State fans were celebrating. The clock had run out, and Western Michigan fans had stormed the field, celebrating a victory over TTUN. It looked like the Wolverines had just lost their opener to a directional school. They dominated the entire game, especially defensively.
Instead, Western Michigan was robbed by the referees at the end of the game, and TTUN was able to win on a Hail Mary. 13-12. After the clock had no time left on the clock, the officials somehow put a second back on, giving TTUN enough time for one final play. Now, the Big Ten must answer for it.
The Big Ten must explain how they screwed WMU out of a victory
At the end of the game, Bryce Underwood threw one of his many bad passes out of bounds. A defender from the Broncos caught the ball after coming from out of bounds, which would stop the clock. The problem is that there was no time showing when the ball hit his hands.
Under the rules, the game should be over at that point. Even NBC rules analyst Terry McAuley said that the game should be over at that point. He was baffled that the officials reviewed the play and put a second back on the clock. He said that the Big Ten would need to explain that decision.
It's unbelievable that the referees saved TTUN from the worst loss they had suffered at home since 2007. In fact, it's something that should be reversed. It's pretty clear that the time had run out on the clock, and WMU had the win. Why not reverse the ending of the game?
There better be a damn good explanation for what happened with the officiating crew throughout the entire night. They missed a clear facemask on TTUN on Western Michigan's final drive. They also missed a clear running-into-the-kicker penalty that would have put them in field goal range after they punted the ball.
Ohio State fans should still be happier about their win than TTUN's near loss
Despite the anger that fans of the Buckeyes should feel about this loss being taken away from TTUN, they should still be happier about Ohio State's performance. The Buckeyes had no issue with the MAC school that they played, crushing Ball State 56-3. That was a game that was never in doubt.
Even with TTUN winning this game somehow, they look like they are in big trouble. They could lose against Oklahoma next week, and they certainly don't look ready to play a team of Ohio State's caliber. That game at the end of November could be a bloodbath in Columbus.
Ohio State fans will be waiting eagerly for some sort of explanation on Sunday or Monday from the Big Ten. There should be something from the officiating crew about this absurd ruling, as well. If there was any time that a game's ending should be reversed, this one certainly has a case for it after what just happened.
