With the craziness of pro players trying to return to college, Ohio State has refused to engage with any of that. Instead, they have been happy with the roster they have had since the spring. These Buckeyes have earned all of the playing time that they have gotten and will get.
Texas did decide to try to bring back a former player who got a fifth year of eligibility, or so they thought. The Longhorns brought back Cole Hutson, who was invited to the Cowboys' minicamp. However, he didn't sign a contract. Yet, he is still not eligible to play for the Longhorns.
Texas OL not eligible to play against the Ohio State Buckeyes
During his weekly press conference, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian informed the media that Hutson is still not eligible to play. It is not because of the new SEC rules, but for another reason. Sark did say that he's hoping to have Hutson available at some point this year.
However, Hutson would be a key member of Texas' offensive line if he were able to play. There is a good chance that he would start for them. For him not to be able to play this game is big for the Buckeyes. That should help their defensive line, which struggled to get sacks in Week 1.
The Longhorns have lost to Ohio State in each of the last two seasons. They need as much talent as they can get if they want to reverse that trend. They beat Texas State 59-7 in a game that was never close. Meanwhile, Ohio State smashed Ball State 56-3.
While Hutson is ineligible, the Longhorns will have Trevor Goosby available. He hurt himself in preseason practice but was still able to go in Week 1. There was concern that he could miss the first couple of weeks of the season, but he is good enough to play.
Ohio State has to play near-perfect against Texas
The Buckeyes are going to be playing in the toughest environment they have played in since taking on TTUN last season. Ohio State is going to have to play almost perfectly to win against the Longhorns in the heat. Running the ball more efficiently will be something they certainly need to do.
After giving up over 160 yards on the ground to Texas State, the Longhorns are vulnerable on the ground. Having Bo Jackson play better early in the game will be critical to Ohio State's chances of winning this game on the road. Throwing the ball should be easy, but gaining yards on the ground might be easier than they expected, as well.
Ohio State's offense shouldn't be the issue in this game. Slowing down Arch Manning and Cam Coleman will be the key to getting a victory in Austin. They also need to avoid any special teams mistakes. They had a couple from Legend Bey in Week 1 that made Ryan Day furious.
Keeping things mistake-free will be the key to getting the best win anyone has in college football.
