During Ohio State's first game of the year, it was a mixed bag for freshman running back Legend Bey. He took a pass for a touchdown, showing off some nice moves while doing so. He also ran the ball well from the backfield, showing off his elusiveness as a runner.
There were also two big mistakes on kickoff returns, in which Bey hesitated before bringing the ball out of the end zone. He did it twice, costing the Buckeyes field position. Day offered up his honest opinion on how Bey looked in his first collegiate game.
Ryan Day describes his thoughts on Legend Bey moving forward
Day thinks that Bey is talented, but he clearly has some growing up to do when it comes to special teams. He talked about that during his weekly press conference.
"I think that was probably expected. I think you guys saw the talent, and then you saw some of the youth. So we're going to continue to build on that. I think he has the right attitude, coming in here every day looking to get better. He's open to coaching. Lock (Carlos Locklyn) has been working really hard. He's transitioning from being a quarterback really to playing these other positions. We're going to continue to bring him along as fast as we can, because I think we all see what can be."
Day and the rest of the coaching staff are clearly excited about what Bey can do. They want to give him touches because of how explosive he is with the ball in his hands. With what he did on offense against Ball State, there is a good chance that the Buckeyes give Bey multiple touches against Texas.
Despite his youth, Bey has shown that he deserves to get the ball in his hands as often as possible. He just needs to clean up the kickoff mistakes, which he clearly made because he just wanted to make a splashy play as a freshman.
Ryan Day will play his best players in order to beat Texas
Day has made it clear that he will be playing his best players when they are in Austin. He was non-committal about possibly replacing Philip Daniels as the starting right tackle. He was by far the worst starting offensive lineman. In fact, he was replaced on the third drive, as they made some changes.
While Daniels did return to play with the starters, that was still less than ideal to see. Daniels did allow a sack against Ball State. That seemed to be the point at which Day wanted a new offensive line combination. Bey was still trusted enough to get carries in the second half, despite his special teams errors.
If the Buckeyes are going to win on Saturday night, they have to play their best possible game. The Longhorns have lost each of the last two games against Ohio State, so they will be very motivated to beat the Ohio State Buckeyes and prevent themselves from falling in a College Football Playoff hole.
