The Ohio State football program brings in some of the best wide receiver recruits every single year. Most of their recruiting classes have four and five-star recruits at that position. The Buckeyes bring in elite pass-catchers every single year. It has become the destination for receivers to go to.

A big reason for that has been the efforts of Brian Hartline. Hartline is the best recruiter in the country at any position. As far as assistant coaches go, he might be the most valuable one to have on your staff in the country. He is an essential member of the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Hartline has stayed as a wide receivers coach for quite a while. Technically, he's also the co-offensive coordinator. That doesn't mean much when he hasn't ever called plays. Perhaps he's tired of that because he has interviewed for an open head coaching job in the Big 12.

Ohio State football assistant coach Brian Hartline interviews for the West Virginia head coaching job

Hartline has interviewed for the open West Virginia head coaching job. This isn't the first time he's interviewed for an open head coaching job. He also interviewed for the Cincinnati job a couple of years back. He's definitely looking around for the right opportunity.

The good news for Buckeye fans is that it doesn't sound like Hartline is a finalist for the position. It sounds like West Virginia has narrowed the decision between three other coaches. That means that Hartline is likely going to stay on staff, at least for this season.

Even if he doesn't get this job, it's clear that Ohio State is no longer his top destination. Losing him would be absolutely catastrophic. He's the most valuable assistant coach they have. They need to do whatever it takes to keep him happy, including allowing him to call plays if that's what he wants to do.
