The Ohio State Buckeyes are trying to navigate life without Julian Sayin. The first iteration of that wasn't successful, as they lost to USC in Los Angeles. It was disappointing, but it wasn't Luke Fahey's fault. He threw for 260 yards and played about as well as you could expect a true freshman to.

Fahey is going to be the quarterback for the foreseeable future. If he ends up being ineffective, then Tavien St. Clair would take over. Regardless, it won't be Sayin. We finally know that Julian Sayin had a broken elbow, as Bill Rabinowitz reported. In fact, he had to have surgery on the fracture.

Julian Sayin underwent surgery for a fractured elbow

The Ohio State quarterback ended up having surgery on a fractured elbow, and his prognosis is good. It looks like he will be able to make a full recovery. He had the surgery two weeks ago and is currently recovering. However, he won't be returning this season.

The typical recovery time for a fractured elbow ranges from six months to a year. That means he won't be returning at all this year. It's a shame that he had to suffer this injury. Had Phillip Daniels not come back for that game, there is a good chance that Sayin would still be playing.

Instead, the rest of the season will rest on the right shoulder of Luke Fahey. He has to learn quickly how to help the offense get more explosive plays. Getting the ball to Jeremiah Smith as much as possible should help with that, but he needs the coaches to help scheme up some open receivers.

Fixing the offensive line is something that needs to happen, too. It's unlikely that Ian Moore plays on Saturday, so that would mean Austin Siereveld swings to left tackle. That would also mean that Daniels would be back on the offensive line at the right tackle position.

Julian Sayin's Ohio State future is uncertain

With this injury, Sayin's future with the Buckeyes is uncertain. He could declare for the NFL and try to get as much money as he can now. However, his draft stock likely wouldn't be very high. He might be a third-round pick, and that's if his recovery does go as planned.

If Fahey or St. Clair leads Ohio State to a national title, Sayin would likely have a conversation with Ryan Day that would almost certainly lead him to transfer. Day wouldn't sit a national title-winning quarterback, no matter how good Sayin looks heading into next year.

However, poor QB play for the rest of this season could see Sayin return and be the starting quarterback for Ohio State next year. That is certainly a possibility based on what we saw in Los Angeles. Still, I think the most likely scenario is that he ends up playing somewhere else next year.

Ohio State is hoping to win a national title this year, even though that seems hard to do after what happened against USC.
