The Ohio State football team is sitting in a good spot after blowing out Tennessee in the first round of the College Football Playoff. It was a 42-17 game that wasn't even that close. Coming off a brutal loss to Michigan, it was perhaps the most unexpected result for the Buckeyes this season.
Ryan Day faced a lot of heat following a fourth straight loss to TTUN, as he should. Fans of the Ohio State Buckeyes do not like losing to that team. Other former coaches came to his defense, including current ESPN analyst Nick Saban, who is perhaps the greatest coach of all time.
Speaking on the Pat McAfee Show on Friday afternoon, Saban took his thoughts further. While saying he thinks the Ohio State football team is talented enough to win the national championship, they have to play consistently. That's completely fair. His next statement was not fair.
Nick Saban calls Ohio State football fans "psychotic"
Saban proceeded to call Ohio State football fans "psychotic" for their obsession with The Game and TTUN. Take a look at the clip below.
For a coach who played in one of the signature rivalries in college football, you would think he would understand what it means to play a game against a hated rivalry. This game matters, and it has mattered to generations of Buckeye fans. To make it irrelevant is just wrong.
The only thing that will make Ohio State fans okay with losing yet another game to TTUN is if they win a national championship. That goal is still within their grasp. Buckeye fans are doing exactly what they should do with The Game. They should be mad that their coach can't win it.
Right now, fans are hoping the Buckeyes can beat Oregon. If they don't, we can have a discussion about whether or not Day should continue being the coach moving forward.
