The Ohio State football team has some of the best matchups in college football scheduled in the future. Over the last few years, they have done right by the fans by scheduling big-time non-conference matchups. Oregon, Notre Dame, and Texas have all been past non-conference opponents.
Over the next few years, the Buckeyes also have home-and-home series scheduled with Alabama and Georgia. Alabama has already affirmed its commitment to take on Ohio State. That's good for college football at large, as fans love watching epic matchups between two teams in different conferences.
Georgia doesn't seem to have the same sort of affinity for these big non-conference matchups. Rumors have already surfaced that the Bulldogs might change their home-and-home with Clemson and move those games to a neutral site. The same thing could happen to the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Ohio State could end up having home-and-home with Georgia moved
It's highly unlikely that the series is outright canceled. These two programs are historic and would love to face each other. The Buckeyes are certainly not going to run away from the game. It's not in their nature to run away from quality matchups, even if it might be in their best interest.
In the 12-team College Football Playoff era, a lot of big-time programs are afraid to schedule non-conference matchups against really good teams. They don't want to have an early-season loss on their resume so that they don't get left out of the CFP.
Ohio State has made these matchups the opposite for them. Instead of early-season losses, these games have actually given them a leg up on their competition in terms of resume building. They have been winning these games, so it has given them a buffer for future losses.
The last time the Buckeyes took down the Bulldogs was in 2022 in the College Football Playoff. Had Noah Ruggles hit a field goal as time expired, the Buckeyes would have been playing for a national championship. Instead, he missed. Georgia ended up destroying TCU for the national title.
Ohio State will continue to schedule non=conference matchups everyone enjoys
Ryan Day has made it clear that he will continue to schedule premier non-conference opponents. He knows that it's good for college football, and he wants Buckeye fans to want to enjoy the games they watch, especially the ones they have to pay for. He wants his fans to be excited about every game his team plays.
The Buckeyes will likely try everything they can to keep the scheduled home-and-home with Georgia as a home-and-home. Georgia would be the ones who try to change it to two neutral-site games. Day wants his team to experience this game in both home environments, which would be nice.
The current schedule for this series is for 2030 and 2031. That means there is still plenty of time for things to change. That could expedite if the College Football Playoff changes to 24 teams, which is still on the table. That would all but kill this series.
