In the day and age of the College Football Playoff, more programs are turning away from scheduling premier non-conference games. The Ohio State football team is one of the few who keeps trying to schedule big matchups that college football fans will enjoy watching.
The Buckeyes took on Texas last year in the Shoe and will take them on again this season in Austin. In the last few years, the Ohio State Buckeyes have taken on Texas, Notre Dame, and Oregon in the non-conference portion of their schedule. The Oregon game in 2021 was before the Ducks joined the Big Ten.
Next season, the Buckeyes are supposed to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide. They have a home-and-home scheduled with them in 2027 and 2028. There have been rumors that Bama was going to cancel the series. Now, it has been reported that they have locked in their series with Ohio State.
Alabama opts to keep sereies with the Ohio State Buckeyes
According to Brett McMurphy, the Crimson Tide has decided to keep the series with Ohio State. Instead, they have decided to cancel a future series with another OSU, Oklahoma State. Bama has decided to stand tall and do something great for college football in general.
It would have been easy for Bama to just cancel the series and schedule a much easier opponent. It's good for college football in general for these two programs to face off against each other. It's a premier game that both fan bases will be jacked up for, and fans across the country will watch, as well.
Ryan Day will have to prepare his team to take on Bama in 2027 and 2028, as well as Georgia in 2030 and 2031. It is very cool for the Buckeyes not to care about what other top programs are doing with their scheduling. Day wants to play the best teams in the country.
Kalen DeBoer is not afraid, and he deserves a lot of credit for that. The next two years will see a couple of great matchups between the Buckeyes and the most storied program in the SEC.
